New CMI project on Latin-America and the Middle East
CMI has been granted 11, 567 million NOK for the project 'Everyday Maneuvers: Military - Civilian Relations in Latin-America and the Middle East'. The project deals with how military forces interact with civil society and respond to social struggle. A core question is whether such interaction furthers democratic reforms. This project addresses this key question by identifying "everyday maneuvers" - that is how the military responds under different conditions to popular demands for social change. Researchers at CMI have invited international and Norwegian researchers and policy makers to pursue this question through a series of case studies of military forces and their interaction with civilian authorities and civil society in the Middle East and Latin America.
This project´s focus responds to Norway´s “Brazil strategy” and engagements in the Middle East.
