Snow 2 (Partisan Ski Competition in Cerkno)
↑ The text reads: In the middle of fierce fighting of the IX corps of the People's Liberation Army, on January 20 and 21, 1945, Partisan skiing competitions in patrol running, jumping, and giant slalom were held in the liberated Cerkno.
This ski competition took place in the moments of the end of the battles around Budapest and in the Ardennes as well as in the moments of one of the most difficult battles on the territory of Slovenia of 1945, the battle for Trnovo, which took place approximately 30 km (as the crow flies) from Cerkno.
Slovene Partisans who participated in the competition “literally came (to Cerkno) from the battlefields. Some of them even missed the start due to fighting activities.”
The competition was watched by more than a thousand spectators, including the staff of the 31st Division and the 9th Corps of the Partisan army as well as the members of the Russian, British, and American military missions.
The military band played Partisan marches to boost a festive mood, and in the evening, awards were given to the winners.
The biggest attraction of this competition was the ski jumps, especially since many had never seen them before. one enthusiastic Partisan soldier greeted the longest jump of the day, achieved by Rudi Finžgar, with the inevitable volley fire.
