The outbreak of war in Sudan on April 15th has shocked many Sudanese and observers alike, even though tensions had been escalating since the 2021 coup The ongoing power-struggle is now being played out in several parts of the country, including the capital Khartoum. Why did the outbreak of violence come as such a surprise this time? What can we learn from history? And what have we not learnt?
