James Wintrup wins FRIPRO Grant for Environmental Health Research Project
We are very excited to announce that CMI's James Wintrup, a medical anthropologist, has won funding from the Norwegian Research Council for a Researcher Project for Early Career Scientists (FRIPRO).
James’s project AHEAD (Addressing health knowledge gaps in zones of environmental harm) will investigate the link between environmental issues and the rise of chronic diseases like cancers, kidney disease, and liver disease. By listening to the experiences and knowledge of local communities in both rural and urban settings affected by plantations and mining, the project aims to gain a new understanding of these diseases.
The goal is to use this community insight to develop better ways to detect and respond to these health challenges and to inform future health guidelines and policies both in Zambia and globally, ultimately contributing to better health and environmental action.
This research seeks to address often-overlooked health issues and ensure that local knowledge plays a vital role in shaping effective solutions.
The project is set to begin in 2026 and will be a close collaboration between partners both in Norway and in Zambia.
