CMI has a formalised co-operation with the School of Government (SoG) at the University of Western Cape. It provides for exchange of staff, support to joint research projects and funding for institutional development. The co-operation has been funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs since 1995. A new 3-year programme was signed in 1998, to run until the end of the year 2000. In addition, NUFU (Committee for Development Research and Education) provides funding for CMI inputs to SoG teaching programme and for a Ph.D. scholarship. During 1999, the co-operation provided funding for projects in regional economic integration, natural resource management, migration and local government. In addition, SoG is involved in two other joint projects with CMI with separate funding:"Humanitarian Assistant and Conflict", and "Inland Fisheries in SADC Countries".
