Feasible Social Security Systems in Africa

Increasing attention is being devoted to social security in developing countries as part of their poverty reduction strategies. This article discusses social security arrangements in sub-Saharan Africa to mitigate the unexpected adversity facing the masses of poor people. It is argued that for a social security system to be feasible in circumstances of severe budget constraints, formal and informal mechanisms must be combined.
