Faith Communities and Democratic Consolidation in Malawi
Presented at: International Conference on 'Religion, Democracy and Law', 15-16 January 2014
This article analyses the role of faith-based organisations (FBOs) in the democratisation process in Malawi. It argues that FBOs play an equivocal role. On the one hand, they contribute substantially to creating a democratic political culture through civic education, while, on the other hand, they fuel strife at the grassroots through aggressive proselytism, on occasion by undemocratic means.
