The aim of this project is to identify critical events in the family history that may explain why some households are lagging behind in the economic growth process of India. We conduct retrospective interviews with a large sample of households in two districts of Orissa, one of the poorest states of India. In a parallel project we conduct a similar survey on poverty dynamics in Nepal, and as a second stage of the India project we will conduct a smaller survey in Bihar to investigate the role of cross-border labor migration. The project is the first collaborative research within an institutional collaboration between Chr. Michelsen Institute and Institute of Economic Growth in Delhi.
