Girl Power - Economic Empowerment in Tanzania
The study takes place in Tanzania and investigates the behaviour of girls when they are on the verge of making some of the most important decisions in their lives. Our interventions target young women three months before they finish secondary school:
- what to do when leaving school?
- start childbearing and a family?
- be more active on the labour market or set-up a business?
We investigate whether early childbearing reflects a lack of empowerment among young girls in Tanzania, with a focus on two different empowerment strategies:
- information about reproductive health, gender equality, and rights.
- entrepreneurship training
The supply of information represents in many ways the classical approach in the field, where the underlying idea is that teenage pregnancies reflect lack of relevant information and personal control. The entrepreneurship training, on the other hand, investigates whether teenage pregnancies to a large extent reflect a lack of economic opportunities.
