EFFEXT researchers at the EU Commission in Addis Ababa

EFFEXT project researchers, Cathrine Talleraas (CMI); Kiya Gezahegne (Addis Ababa University); and Oliver Bakewell (GDI, University of Manchester) visited the EU commission in Addis Ababa on Friday 6th December. They discussed some of the EFFEXT project’s key findings and the ways forward for EU initiatives on migration and migration governance in Ethiopia. The EU Commission highlighted the need for more research on the impact of their initiatives, and emphasised the usefulness of getting research-based perspectives and insights.

These overarching themes were also discussed at the EFFEXT final conference held in Addis Ababa from 2-3rd December. Here, the need for more research funding in the global south was also highlighted. An attendee representing the African Union reiterated the importance of increased research on migration governance within Africa – mentioning that there is a need for more understanding of how African migration governance operates.

From its inception onwards, the project team, lead by Cathrine Talleraas, have sought to develop policy-relevant insights. Throughout the duration of the project, the team have enable research-policy dialogue with relevant actors, focusing on the EU, European States and stakeholders, as well as policy stakeholders in countries in Africa and the Middle East.
