Anti-Corruption in the Extractive Industry
The African Legal Support Facility (ALSF) hosted the African Mining Legislation Atlas (AMLA) Training Workshop in Nairobi, jointly with the Strathmore University’s Extractive Industry Centre and the African Union, in December 2017. The workshop brought together approximately 80 participants from across the world including academics, practitioners, government officials, international organisations and advanced law students from 23 African universities. They received training on the financial, administrative, and other related aspects of the mining industry.
As a part of this workshop, Dr Amundsen held a lecture on Anti-Corruption in the Extractive Industry, also called “the elephant in the room”. This lecture highlighted the main concepts, forms, and levels of corruption, the corruption challenges to the extractive sector, the resource curse theory, and anti-corruption in the form of international law and organisations, the institutions of checks and balances, the principles of good governance, and the question of fair distribution of revenues.
