CMI researchers appointed to Afghanistan Review Commission

Arne Strand and Torunn Wimpelmann have been appointed members of a committee that will evaluate Norway’s engagement in Afghanistan from 2015-2021.

The new committee appointed by the Norwegian government will evaluate Norway’s efforts in Afghanistan and is tasked to look at the Norwegian military contribution, the evacuation operation from Kabul in 2021, Norwegian aid to Afghanistan and Norway’s peace and reconciliation efforts.

The committee will use the report from the previous Afghanistan Review Committee which presented its findings in 2016 as a starting point and place the Norwegian contribution to Afghanistan within an international context. The committee’s findings will be presented late 2025.

The commission is led by Bjørn Tore Godal, who was head of the previous Afghanistan Review Committee that evaluated Norway’s military and civilian efforts in Afghanistan. CMI research director Torunn Wimpelmann also participated in this committee, alongside CMI emerita Astri Suhrke.
