A number of studies suggest that the practices of multinational corporations in relation to corporate social responsibility and in other areas, differ according to their home country. This is also anecdotally observed in Africa in general and Angola in particular, where differences between Chinese companies and Western companies have received much attention and been the topic of considerable debate.

This project includes four studies. A study on the motivation and effect of the CSR policies of Western multinational companies in Angola provides an important baseline against which to assess Chinese multinationals. Two studies of determinants of Chinese foreign direct investment globally and in Africa, exploit available quantitative data to elicit the main motivations and likely effects of the Chinese strategy of internationalization. On this basis, a fourth study analyzes the activities of Chinese companies in Angola, collecting survey data to map the perceptions of Chinese activities and their effect on the local economy.
