The Urban Crisis, Governance and Associational Life
In this introductory chapter to the anthology, the editors discuss the meaning of associational life in the context of rapid urbanisation in Africa. In trying to come to grips with the myriad of associational forms that characterise African cities the authors develop a set of criteria for defining civil society. They then go on to considered their ability to meet the urban crisis.
